broken skeg on outboard

Just noticed yesterday that the bottom 3' or so on my mercury 200 outboard has broken off....I never noticed anything while in the water, must have happened while on trailer, tho I cant see how? Maybe took a bump or RR track too fast? anyway...I know that is not an integral piece to the puzzle, but it does serve a purpose to protect prop....I have an idea that this can be repaired, anyone have a good source or number that they can share?

If it's just the bottom 3" broken off, I'm not sure I would go to the trouble of repairing it unless it's on a high performance boat. And even then you wouldn't want it welded. As long as it didn't bend anything out of shape, just file the edges and use it. JMOA

Yeah, I know that it probably does not have to be fixed, the boat handles fine and I don't run super fast...but I'm pretty OCD about my stuff, and now that broken skew is all that I can see when I look at boat in the garage. It's either fix it, or sell it!

It can be repaired easily with a SkegShield Skeg Guard. Skegshields can be found at Bass pro or many places on the web. Skegshield web site has a reference list that will tell you which one will fit your motor. I bought one from amazon for my 90hp mercury and works great.
Mine had been towed with the engine to low by the previous owner and had shaved off a couple inches from the bottom of the skeg also.

My old TX partner and I ran around on a bullet with a 225 EFI with a broken skeg for years. he actually had it welded back on and it kept breaking off. we both agreed it actually handled and drove better with the skeg off. lol

If you decide to have a new skeg welded on, I had mine done by Dan's Prop Shop in Soddy Daisy! He did a great job and reasonably priced!

Thanks for all the help guys, I may get the bolt on skeg guard, will keep me from looking at it anyway....looks like a giant, broken canine tooth!

The proper way to repair a skeg is to cut off high where the thickest part is- up near the torpedo. Then, buy a real replacement skeg and have it welded on. If you try to weld on a thin piece, it will break off under a load. The skeg gards are good too and easier. The skeg os like a rudder and is very important. Not to mention- This lake is hell on props even with a skeg.
