Trolling motor wiring

Just bought a 80 pound minn kota fortrex. I had a 70 pound maxxum. The instructions call for 6ga wire from the front to the back of the boat 19ft. I had no issues with the 70 pound and the factory 10ga. Can I continue to get away with 10ga or should I bite the bullet and rewire?

If it calls for 6ga i would rewire that is 2 wire sizes. And the bigger wire will help with voltage drop. Just my 2 cents from a dumb ole electrician

Ended up rewiring with 6ga. I also had to upgrade the circuit breaker from a 50 to 60 amp. Now I just have to install the recessed foot pedal tray and I'm good to go.

Several things can happen when using undersized wiring and none of them are good. Like stated earlier, wiring is cheap on Fleabay. Get Marine wire and make sure it's tinned. Tinned wire resist corroding so good, it almost doesn't
