Both manufacturers are great products; I actually have both on my boat. In my opinion only! and you will have people disagree with me, but I think the Down imaging on Lowrance is superior; I think the side imaging on the Humminbird is better. Humminbird is more user friendly and the Lakemaster Maps, compatible with Humminbird only, is the greatest thing on the market today. Lowrance will share mapping between units, one card serves both units; Humminbird does not, you have to use a card in each unit. Humminbird used to be much easier on the pocket book, but Lowrance now has comparable prices on the new Elite TI series that also uses one transducer, as does Humminbird, for sonar, DI and SI. These are just a few of the pros and cons for these two, then throw in Garmin and you have another whole set of values to compare. Just my two cents..........give me a call if you have questions.

if you already have hb, wouldn't it make sense to get another hb so you can network them.

Yes it would I have just heard a lot of good things about the gen3 and if I liked it which my other out but now that the helix megas out I mit go with it

Humminbird Helix G2N Mega SI GPS combo will carry a dedicated crystal for DI in the transducer just as it did in the Onix transducer giving the clearest DI image on the market. The Mega SI isn't to shabby either.

I have the hd transducer on mine now and I can't ever get it really clear like people say they do

Menu once the SI Enhance and adjust the sensitivity and contrast to your liking. Make sure sharpness is OFF

Menu/Menu
Sonar

Make sure the unit is on 455kHz

Chart speed at 5

2D at 200kHz

If you guys noticed on all these pictures the speed is around 2 mph, I don't know of too many trolling motors that will run 5 mph ( maybe if you have a 112 on a 16' boat) So if your trolling, you need to match the speed on your charts as well; does wonders for clarity and crispness

I have been using Gen 2 Lowrance HDS units for several years now. I like them but am looking at Garmin for the future. Why? For years now they have been a competitive choice to the 2 big names- Lowrance and Humminbird. Now, look at the features Garmin has like- better gps. And panoptics. Its the biggest thing since sidescan. Pro's like Mark Rose are leaving Lowrance for Garmin. There are other great sonar/mapping units out there too like Ray Marine. And, Interphase has always been cutting edge superior. In fact i heard that companies like L and H, buy their technology from interphase. ?? I think they were 1st with forward panning sonar. Worth checking into. ps; I heard Lowrance may be introducing a 9" chirp dsi. To complement the 5 and 7" units. !!

I would like to plus one for Garmin. Based off my opinion that they have the best maps and connectivity. I have never lost connection with a satellite with my Garmin units unlike humming bird and lowerance units. Other than this I pretty much agree with everyone else on a lot of things.

I would also suggest looking into Vexilar fishfinder. I got mine for under $120 (incl. boat mount). Works reasonably well.
