Looking to replace my aging electronics. Somewhat restricted on budget but would like to have side imaging. is it more important for side imaging to be at the console or on the trolling motor? Currently have a lowarance with gps with down imaging at the console. I was thinking of moving it to the trolling motor and possibly getting new hummingbird 7 with side imaging for the console. Thoughts?

I currently have the same setup. I had a an Lowrance Elite 5x HDI, down imaging only unit, at the console and recently bought a Humminbird 899ci HDI, I put the 899 on the console and moved the Lowrance unit to the bow. I am upgrading to a 899 on the bow soon I hope. I don't think SI would work well on the bow. For one SI works best at 3.5-5 MPH. Also if you turn the trolling motor it blurs the image, as it does with the DI that I have on the bow now. SI performs well in strait lines. Also if I had known then I would have just put up the extra cash and purchased the 898, It comes with a 800khz transducer, higher resolution and more configuration options if that makes any sense to you.

I think you have a good plan, talk to Johnny at DJ Electronics. He will get you the best deal and advise you.

Typically the SI works better in a straight line. The trolling motor is always turning side to side so I would use side imaging at the console. Get two units that you can link together with Ethernet or get an Interlink system. You can mark fish or structure on the SI unit and the way point will automatically go on the bow unit as well. This works good for me.
