Mercury engine alarm

I have a 1998 Mercury 200 carb engine. Had an alarm start going off at idle, a constant fast beeping. It would go away if you revved it up or when running. The next day, it stays on constant as soon as the engine tries to start.

Oil is full and in the tank under the cowl. I've got water pressure. Just replaced water separator filter. Any ideas?

Could be water in fuel, oil pump failure, overheat, or something else. Don't ignore the alarms. Shut it down and get it to somebody that knows something.

Sounds like a relatively cheap fix.
