CHIRP Technonogy

I am interested in getting a new depth finer for the bow on my boat and am considering buying a lowrance elite 5 or 7. But wanted to know if Any of the Humminbird units have the CHIRP technology as well?

Humminbird has not introduced anything with CHIRP technology as of yet.

Humminbird Onix and Ion are capable of CHIRP Sonar but require the optional purchase of CHIRP Ethernet SONAR module

what is chirp technology?

CHIRP technology (Compressed High-Intensity Radiated Pulse). This is a brief description of the difference. The main difference is clarity and target separation; but affects 2D Sonar Only.

CHIRP CLARITY Advantages:

MULTIPLE CHIRP SETTINGS FROM A SINGLE TRANSDUCER
Because Lowrance® fishfinders give you the option of using more than one CHIRP Sonar signal, it's important to understand which one is right for your fishing situation.

HIGH CHIRP FREQUENCY SELECTION
Most frequently used for freshwater as well as more shallow coastal areas. It provides the greatest detail for tracking smaller objects, like your lure, or identifying game fish from bait fish, as well as game fish that are near structure or on the bottom.

MEDIUM CHIRP FREQUENCY SELECTION
Wide coverage makes this frequency best for covering large areas while searching for structure or fish. However, this option is not as detailed as High CHIRP and will not penetrate as deep as Low CHIRP.

LOW CHIRP FREQUENCY SELECTION
Provides the greatest depth performance, while marking fish targets throughout the entire water column.

2D Sonar is one frequency

I wasn't 100% sold on CHIRP for bass fishing but after seeing some deeper ledge fish with CHIRP, I think it provides a whole lot more target separation. Especially good on Great Lakes smallies.

Ignore the depths on the screenshot. Just testing the CHIRP sonar and didn't have everything available on our software version.

Humminbird has been offering Real Chirp Sonar since the ONIX & ION Models where introduced: http://www.humminbird.com/Category/Technology/CHIRP/

CHIRP is a term that is being used in the industry and there are differences in Low Cost CHIRP versus the Real CHIRP Systems that scan numerous frequencies each cycle and require black box transmitters and expensive transducers that must be externally mounted because of the tremendous heat created and are cooled by the water they are immersed in. This is a good article discussing the differences: http://www.sportfishingmag.com/fishing-boats/making-sense-higher-and-lower-cost-chirp-sounders

raymarine are the only ones with a actual chirp transducer. The other brands manipulate it in the software which isn't true chirp.

Real Deal CHIRP is Expensive and Require $$$$ Transducers and Blackbox to transmit and process numerous frequency points. They generate tremendous heat and is why Real Deal CHIRP sonar transducers must be externally mounted and some are HUGE!
