new bbq pit cook top

What would be the best surface top for an open cinderblock bbq pit for non toxic cooking , Steel Grate or what ? Suggestions please

Seasoned cast iron (think Lodge skillet) for a flat top but steel punch plate or expanded metal work just fine for grilling/smoking/bbq.
