replacing valve and livewell pump

the live well pump screws into the valve and want to know what to put on the threads to prevent leaks thanks

<font size="3" face="georgia,palatino">Silicone tape or pipe dope. Silicone tape is the easiest and neatest. Run the tape in reverse to the threads about 4 to 6 wraps. Then snug by hand and tighten about a half turn. Do not over tighten or you will stretch the threads and bad things start to happen.</font>

Did you replace the valves? I think I need to replace mine because I cant keep either of my 2 livewells empty.
