I own many rods,… from cheapo’s up to my handful of G-Loomis NRX series rods which are $500 a pop, and I have finally found a rod that outperforms them all HANDS DOWN NO CONTEST.
John Miles is a gentleman who has been building rods for over 40 years, and he is incredible at what he does. You can buy a much better rod for less than you are used to paying for your so called “nice” Loomis, St. Croix, Shimano, stuff, and don’t even mention the name Carrot Stick, what a joke.
Just TRY one of his rods. He has hundreds and hundreds in stock at his shop, and will gladly let you look them all over. If you don’t find what you want, he can easily and quickly make any style rod, with every feature personalized to your specific needs as an angler.
Just to clear things up,… here’s an example…. OK, let’s say you go out and buy a $250 G-loomis Bronze back series rod, which is pretty high up there in Loomis rods. Let’s compare that to a beginner level J. Miles rod. First of all, the graphite in the Miles rod is THREE TIMES more modulus than in the Loomis. This means that the Miles rod is 35% lighter, more resilient, and has much better response. Let’s also take a look at the line guides, (which are a major functioning part of the rod). The retail price for a single guide on the Loomis rod is $1.85, whereas the retail price on a single guide on John Miles custom rod is about $6. Now,… more expensive doesn’t always mean better, but if I am paying $250 for a rod, I kind of feel jipped when the materials cost adds up to $45. If I am spending the same amount on a custom rod, and the material costs are more than triple that, well then… that’s a huge difference and it’s obviously much better materials.
So, if you’re the expert and the guy who has two of everything, and really think you know your stuff about gear, then I’m sure all you fish with is J. Miles Custom rods. And if you don’t own a J. Miles, then I guess you’re not that much of an expert after all. Example… name me a professional IN ANY SPORT that just goes to the nearest sporting goods store, or looks in a catalog and orders their equipment. So… If you’re an expert at angling, why would you buy a store bought, one of a billion, same ole’ same ole’, pre made to what someone else thought would make a good rod, fishing rod. I don’t care how much they charge for these “NEW” latest and greatest rods, they don’t beat a Miles rod.
Now, if you’re the guy who isn’t advanced enough to know you need a better rod… that is understandable. But you’re the one who needs the best equipment available to you, because it will help compensate for your lack of skill.

I may sound like a pro, but obviously I am not, because I just got my first J. Miles rod a few weeks ago. I have spent the last decade buying fishing rods, and am finally… Completely…. Satisfied. Until I come up with another rod for John to build.

A replace my trolling motor every three years and would not recommend buying one of my used ones (even for parts) and I am twice as hard on my rods! Heck, my boat looks fifteen years old and it's only a 2007. My point is I fish John miles rods because they take a tremendous amount of abuse and they function as well as the day I bought them. John does not cut any corners on materials or craftsmanship! Just my two cents...

First of all John, is a good Christian man. I've been using rods that John or his wife built for a good 20 yrs. I bought my first one when John was running a shop on North Ocoee st. here in Cleveland. I still have that rod. I broke the tip off of it about 15 yr. ago, but still use it when I want a stiff rod. It still looks great, Johns wife but a nice wrap on the butt when it was built. Over the yrs. I have bought several rods from John and have never been disatified with the workmanship or materials used. Oh yeah, I have other rods even a couple G-Loomis, but the other rods I have are for other people in my boat. I won't let anyone else use my John Miles rods.

I still fish my rod he built in 1982. It's been repaired several times but I love it. Oh, and yes I do get a kick back,... I mean I wouldn't take the time to promonte anyone just for the sake of helping someone out, or because his rods are way better than what you can buy. I am way too shallow for that. It's not like I actually use the rods or anything, I just promote my good friends so they wll pay me...... Give me a break

Hey Grant... don't feel bad. I'm on John's payroll too. John sends me a big fat check every time I say something nice about his rods. That's why I'm so filthy rich. I mean loaded!

The only rods in my boat are John Miles rods
I have known the man since the mid 80's and have never had an issue or a problem with any rod
He has gone out of his way for me and to fix my own errors not his
John makes the best rods bar none!

I know this doesnt' mean much, but you have never seen a better looking rod in your life. He uses everything from the best silk threads, to real diamondback rattlesnake skin, and malard feathers to accent his rods.

Guys grants a custom guitar builder, it's his way of life. and knowing him for years, and him helping me build my own guitar a couple years back i learned how much companies mark up their products. while you can pay $50 for a kit and $100 for an amazing paint job it is simply crooked when a person wants custom you should give them custom. I'm excited about meeting J. miles this week, grant as a local artists is simply trying to help local builders instead of us who order rods threw big companies. just like a generic clock it may do the job but there's no story behind it or no sense of personal connection like when you design it your self.

John is awesome, about 90% of my rods are J Miles rods. Best part of getting a rod from him is getting to go hang out in his workshop.

Back in the 70's I fished with John at CENTER HILL Lake for Smallmouth, Promise was, He would give me the Spinning Rod that I was using. Deal was, If I caught a Smallmouth, I would get the ROD. No sooner said than DONE. I still have the ROD. Old Timer, but it will catch fish.Best Wishes JOHN!
