I need some help hooking up my Motorguide Pro Series trolling motor. I have two new deep cycle batteries set up on a 24v setup. Battery A has new 6 gauge wire running to the front of the boat off of the + post. This includes a 50 amp manual breaker. Battery B has new 6 gauge wire running to the front of the boat off of the - post. I have a jumper wire connecting battery A's - to battery B's +.

The wires will connect to a Marinco 12-24 covered receptacle. There are four connections post on the back of the receptacle. A+ B+ A- B-.

1st question -- How do I correctly connect the battery wires to the receptacle? + wire to A+ and - wire to B - ??

Now to the male connector. It is a Marinco four prong post. The top prong has a L shape. The other three prongs are flat if that makes sense. There are four connection ports on the inside of the male connector. Currently, the negative wire coming from the foot pedal control is connected to the L shape prong. The positive is connected to the post clockwise to the negative connection.

Is this correct?

What am I doing wrong?

When I tried connecting the trolling motor using this setup, the receptacle started sparking more than it should.

Thank you for your help.

I thought the circuit breaker comes off the positive post? At least the diagram from motorguide shows that setup

Also what about the connections on the male plug and female connectors?

That did not answer your question. That Connector is designed to receive four wires from the two batteries. Since you have the Jumper wire between your batteries, Two is all you need running to the connector. I have no hands on experience with that particular type connector but I would say the one L shaped prone is the design that restricts you from rotating the Connector when plugging it together. I am assuming that you connected the two wires from the TM to the connector. and that you connected the wires from the batteries A+ and B- to the connector as well. Looking at the connector, the positive wire from your TM must correspond through the connector with battery wire A+. The neg TM wire runs through the connector to the B- wire.. Now... As i said i am not familiar with that connector but I feel I know your problem. On your connector you have four posts for four wires from two batteries. There must be a connection internally in the connector so as to reduce down to the two wire requirement for any TM. Hopefully you have a tester so as that you can connect each of the posts to each other. You should find that you have two of the posts that are linked with an internal bar in the connector. By having the Neg from the TM to the L post that is fine. However , I feel the adjacent post CW has an internal bar connecting the two posts. Skip that first post and run the TM Positive to Battery A+ to the second post or opposite post... It is mandatory that at least two of the four posts in the connector be connected so as to serve the same as the jumper wire on your batteries. It you have both your + and _ to the Connector posts that are connected you will definitely get 24 volt fireworks.  It would be best for you to find the two post that are linked internally in the connector and avoid connecting to either of them.  The other two post should be direct through the connector and free from interference.

I typed this one time and I hope it is clear enough for you to understand. I will be more than happy to assist you further if necessary...David Worley

As men we do not follow instruction paperwork since we are all masters of knowledge... (Ha-Ha) However if you still have your paperwork for the connector it should clearly show the diagram where there is a need for the jumper or connection of Battery wires A- to B+. Then again it could avoid telling you of the internal connection but there should be a diagram. Remember. A- and B+ are to be connected for your TM to run 24 Volts. That connector is designed to connect the two wires so you will not be required to jump at the batteries.. YOU DID IT THE BEST WAY ... Otherwise you would have to run four wires to your connector from the batteries.

Did you find that you did in fact have the internal bar inside the connector that served the purpose of the jumper between batteries as I had suspected? I am absolutely delighted to be of assistance to anyone I may help.
