Location: Ooltewah TN (71.226.179.144) | I thought I would tell a little about my dog. I have a Sheltie. He is about nine and getting on up there for a dog of his size and age. He was acting stiff and slow. That ad you sometimes see on TV about Cosequin fits him. It is not all that cheap so you have to really want to help your dog. I think we paid $45 for a bottle of 100 tablets.(50 days) He is very picky about what he eats so I crush one in the morning and evening with his food and he eats it just fine. He has been on it a couple weeks and has shown notable improvement. Seems like this stuff works. Thought I would give a heads up to other dog lovers if you have a like issue. Jmax |

You can learn a lot about quality of their food on www.dogfoodanalysis.com or www.dogfoodadvisor.com. Anything that can be purchased at walmart (including science diet and iams) isn't worth feeding any dog. The good foods cost more per pound but they last longer and you spend less $$ at the vet. |

Location: Wildwood,Ga (166.248.65.41) | You're on the right track, Jim what is in the suppliment you are giving your dog is glucosemine, a lot like what we get from Drs. for joint pain.
IAMS, Science Diet.Pro Plan and even Pedigree (healthy joint) foods offer foods that contain glucosemine-even avaliable at Wal-Mart will help some-but the supplement you're using helps even more!
And yeah-this info didn't come from my dumb ass but my lovely Wife who has been in the Vet business 30 yrs or so.
As a matter of fact you can go to Wal-Mart in the vitamin section and get the Glucosemine supplement and translate the dosage per lb and get it for about 9 bucks a bottle.

Location: Sale Creek (69.246.156.34) | Thanks for the info. I love my dog and my dog loves me....In fact, I'm pretty certain I could lock my wife and dog up in the trunk of the car all day and when I got home in the afternoon and openened the trunk......the dog would be very happy to see me. The wife would have many choice words and I would probably not see for 2 weeks due to eye swelling...... |

Location: Soddy Daisy (74.82.64.160) | Here is what dogfoodanalysis.com says about Pedigree:
This food receives a 1 star rating simply because there is nothing lower.
The primary ingredients in the food are grains (it should be meat!). Corn is a problematic grain that is difficult for dogs to digest and thought to be the cause of a great many allergy and yeast infection problems. We prefer not to see this used in dog food.
Meat and bone meal is a low quality meat product for which it is impossible to determine the source.
Corn appears a second time as corn gluten meal. The AAFCO definition of corn gluten meal is “the dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ, and the separation of the bran by the process employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup, or by enzymatic treatment of the endosperm”. In plain English, that which remains after all the nutritious bits have been removed.
The next ingredient is by-products. It is impossible to ascertain the quality of by-products and these are usually products that are of such low quality as to be rejected for use in the human food chain, or else are those parts that have so little value that they cannot be used elsewhere in either the human or pet food industries. The AAFCO definition of chicken by-product meal is “a meal consisting of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice.”
Animal fat is a further low quality ingredient and is impossible to determine the source. Unidentified ingredients are usually very low quality. AAFCO define this as "obtained from the tissues of mammals and/or poultry in the commercial processes of rendering or extracting. It consists predominantly of glyceride esters of fatty acids and contains no additions of free fatty acids. If an antioxidant is used, the common name or names must be indicated, followed by the words "used as a preservative".
This food uses chemical preservatives (BHA, BHT) which is believed to be carcinogenic, and is banned from use in human food. It also uses artificial colourants.
The 6th and 12th ingredients are fragments of wheat. The use of wheat is a significant negative: wheat is believed to be the number one cause of allergy problems in dog food. This is another ingredient we prefer not to see used at all in dog food.
Everybody that owns a dog should visit this website. |

Location: Soddy Daisy (74.82.64.160) | Just so you know, IAMS, Science diet, all Purina foods, Eukanuba, Ol Roy, etc all have the same bad reviews. You all would be enlightened if you'd spend a few minutes reading reviews at www.dogfoodanalysis.com. 4Health at Tractor supply is pretty good stuff and won't break the bank. If $$ is no object you's be better off with Orijen, EVO, Blue wilderness, Taste of the Wild, etc. Those are probably the four best foods on the market. All can be bought local except Orijen. |

For sale-30 lbs of Pedegree (adult formula)
Thanks JMax for starting this whole post-and I hope dog lovers pay attention.

Location: Wildwood,Ga (166.248.132.132) | Shoot-I just upgraded from Pediree to Diamond (Lite) with Glucosimine and Condroitants, Lamb and rice a week ago and I see a difference in our dog's energy and maybe even her coat,
On the website Lance listed Diamond only rated a 3, but I think it will do for now.
With her being a large Golden and eating 4-5 cups a day $50 plus a bag is a little rich for us. The Diamond was $27 for 30 lbs at Sun & Shade in the metropolitan Tiftonia area.
Thanks again JMax and Lance! |

Location: Ooltewah TN (71.226.179.144) | I do not say it often but I very seldom need to.....Beetlespin was right. I went to Tractor Supply and looked at their dog foods. I had used all of that Cosequin up on my dog and needed to either get some more or look at a brand of dog food that has it in it. After calling the expert(BS) we settled on 4Health dog food for older dogs 7+ years of age. It's number one stuff is Lamb and it has more vitamins in it then I can remember. It also as a large amount of the Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate in it. By buying it with the two in one bag I actually came out cheaper and with a better dog food. I had never been in a Tractor Supply to look at dog food. They have one of the largest selections of dog and cat foods I have seen in a store. Worth the visit. Jmax |

Location: Wildwood,Ga (166.248.67.149) | Yeah Jim-I'm really glad you started this post , because the info Lance provided was really good. You can sure spend a LOT on dog food to get the best.
I looked into the 4-health and it was reasonable ( $38 for 30 lbs) But, I ended up with the Diamond Light ( for lard butted dogs) at Sun & Shade in Tiftonia and they compared really well with the 4-Health.
I'm not close to a Tractor Supply so I got my dog off of Pedegree the day and went to them, after reading all this. And after what, 3 wks or so I can tell a difference in her coat, weight and activity ( plus her turds aren't quite as bitter)
The Diamond was pretty much in the middle in the websites ratings and was $26 for 30 lbs.
So yeah-if you love your dog, read through all this! |

Location: Chickamauga, GA (68.60.4.72) | I too have been following this post and am in the process of weening my dogs over from Dog Chow to 4 Health. I never knew Dog Chow was not that good of a food. I may have to try the Diamond food since it seems a little cheaper. ( I seen some lures I want) We just started the weening yesterday so we will se how they like the 4 Health first.
Thanks again Jmax for this post. -----
