I got my first boat in Feb of last year and used it alot. Two times I have launched and forgot to put the reach plug in. Its a dead give away when you throttle up and the boat nearly stands straight up! Luckily my arms are long enough to plug it from the back of the boat laying down. I almost made it a third time but I remembered and pulled the trailer out and let it drain.

I think everyone has pulled that stunt from time to time. We went to test drive our first boat in 1987. The owner put the boat in without the plug. Boats didn't float like they do now. The boat filled up over 2/3rds full. Of course we ended up buying the boat from the poor guy.

I had not fished Chick for over 30 years and my cousin, from Hixson, who was over 70 years old loved to fish, I had promised him a crappie fishing trip. I drove the 1 hr & 20 min and met cuz @ Chester Frost. We fished around the sloughs for several hrs, Cuz's favorite spots from years past, and caught a lot of throw-backs and a few keepers.
I mentioned Wolfteever Creek. He said "yea, it's down and across, so we headed out. I had caught a lot of crappie in that creek back in the 60.s-70.s.
Those of you that have fished it know where I'm going. This was several years ago.
We took off in my G3 and headed towards the creek, when I asked Cuz "where's the channel"? He couldn't remember.
I said, "we will just follow that boat in and go from there" There was a small cruiser pointing toward the Marina, so I took off at full speed, in a hurry to catch some slabs, when I noticed I was gaining on that cruiser. Proud of my new G3 and 40 Yamaha 'cause I was gaining fast, when my shallow depth alarm went off. I hit the trim button and throttled down, when I saw the sign on the back of an old wooden cruiser that said, "FOR SALE CHEAP", had a phone number too. It was grounded and we almost were.
You couldn't have pulled 30 pound test outta my arse. Whew.
I took the paddle and pushed us out to deeper water and we both had a good laugh.
Follow the bouys stupid!!!

i had 3 friends(old college roomates) come up to the G last year to hammer some fish on the trap. one of them had a boat and the other two would pair up with us... they had never been here before so it was all on me... we all fished side by side for a few hours with both boats catchin a couple of small ones a peice... the guy with me didnt fish much, so i really wanted him to catch some.... so we decided to make a long run to a place where i knew we could hammer on some good ones... the others didnt want to run that far so i told them a place or two to check, i figured they'd catch a few more but nothing big.....

long story short, my boat never had another bite and when we met up for dinner, they had caught over a 100 with a ton of 4 and 5lbers... they said it was the best fishing they had ever imagined.....

needless to say i wore that place out the next few weeks and never caught more than a couple there ever again....

Me and a buddy had been fishing all day up towards B&B so we are coming in at around noon. By this time the plave is crawling with people. Him being a single guy decided to jump from the boat to the dock to impress the pretty girls. Well he was thinking he could jump further I guess Cause he made it almost with one foot.

The funniest thing I ever saw was when I was younger. On our farm pond we had a small flat bottom boat. My dad was out on it fishing and we had some geese nesting on the other side. Well he forgot about them and went fishing towards them. Then here comes the big old goose flying dead at Dad. So Dad jumps up with the paddle in hand and goes for a overhead swing and falls backwards off the boat. Me and my Mom almost died laughing when he popped up covered in nasty pond mud.

I have also done the kill switch thing before! It will make you furious. I also thought my trolling motor went bad once. I awlays unplug it to charge my batteries and when I got to the lake I forgot to plug the connector back up .

I can tell a good one on myself I guess. When I was a boy, nature always called when I was on the lake with my dad. We were up above Sale Creek on a particularly rough day. I told my dad I had to go. So we headed to Grasshopper. The trip took forever with waves crashing over the front of the boat. When we finally got there someone had used all the tp in the john. My dad made me dig a Hardee's sack out of the garbage and wipe with it. He told me this would be the only way to keep the dingleberries away. Keep in mind I was only 8 years old or so. I didn't even know what dingleberries were. He then decide to change our fishing series to "Dumpmasters" instead of Bassmasters.
Kind of embarassing, but hope it makes ya'll laugh

Same here with the plug incident

Me and a buddie were fishing possum creek when I made a bad cast up under a trapoline way back on a dock, I moved the boat over to the dock and got off to walk up the dock and retrieve my lure from under the trapoline. As I was crawling under it, 2 big dobermin pinchers come running accross the lawn in my direction. I hurried to get my lure and retreat to the boat. When I stood up and started to run down the dock, my buddie thought it would be funny to pull the boat out away from the end of it. So here I am standing at the end of the dock with 2 big barking and growling dogs running up behind me and my boat is 15yrds away. The only thing that came to mind was jump in and swim. I dont know how many of you have tried to swim with a fishing rod in one hand and a cell phone in the other but it doesnt work well. O ya and my buddie was laughing so hard on the front of my boat I nearly drowned trying to get to it. I have a few others like this and may post them later.

The funniest one that I can think of off the top of my head happened when I was about 10 years old. My Grandfather, Dad, and myself were fishing on Cherokee, they kept spraying there worms with smelly juice, so naturally I had to spray mine! Right before I leaned over to spray my worm dad said "don't fall in," of course this made me mad, and wouldn't you know it I fell in. The funniest part is that my dad and grandfather both swear that when dad pulled me out by the back of my life jacket that I was still trying to swim! Dead of summer, but I felt so cold!

And I know I am not the only one to do this, but I do it quite often, and that is take off with the trolling motor still down!

My friend, who has now moved to North Carolina and no longer fishes with me, and I were crappie fishing in Watts Bar lake back in the 70's in early March. He had an old boat that must have been Noah's life boat from the ark, and he had welded a seat pedastal on the front several years before. The weld was rusted and neither of us knew it. This was long before we had depth finders so we really didn't know how deep the water was in any of the places that we fished. But, we found fish in about 4 different spots in that one long cove and we have been making "milk" runs back and forth between the hot spots. The boat was a 14' aluminum boat with a tiller handle, so Johnny ran the boat and I was responsibile for dropping the anchor at every spot that we fished. No trolling motors either.

We had a real good mess of crappie and had decided that we would make this last stop on this particular spot and then go home. Although the day was slightly warm, (I had shorts on), the water was still quite cold. We approached that final fishing spot, and I lifted the anchor like I had been doing all day, and reached behind me while leaning back on the seat when the weld finally gave way and young DK did a 360 off the front of the boat. I remember it like it was yesterday. I had on a blue shirt, a Tennessee ballcap and flipup sunglasses over my perscription glasses.

Horror set in when I realized just shortly before hitting the water that the anchor rope had encircled my leg about 2 times and the anchor is going to the bottom and I'm going to the bottom with it and we don't have a clue how deep this water is. I took a deep breath, hit the water, went to the bottom, lay on the bottom untangling my leg from the anchor rope and stood up. I was in chest deep water and when I stood up, the waves from me breaking the surface flipped my sunglasses up. I still had my cap on and my buddy Johnny was literally laying in the bottom of the boat laughing his you-know-what off and told me that I was the funniest looking dude that he had ever seen. I had to laugh too after he hauled me back into the boat and we headed for home.

That was my 2nd time to fall out of my boat into the water. I'm not going to repeat the first time.

When I was a kid, my family and another family went to the lake, one around nashville, deep as crap, forgot the name. Well we are out skiing and having fun. three kids and one adult. One kids falls on the skis so we stop the boat, well the wave behind the boat comes well over the back of the boat. Thats when we realize there is more water than that wave in the boat (its sinking). We are yelling at the skier to swim in, but he is just yelling to go again, he does not know the boat is sinking at this point in time. WE just start pulling the ski rope in as he is holding on a yelling for another ride. Finally get the kid in the boat and the water is deep all through the boat. Now the motor will not start, its an inboard and apparently its partially under water. Three of us go to the front and try to get the back of the boat to come out of the water so we can start the engine. Finally after several minutes of attempts we get the motor started and head for the shore. Now the boat is running at about a 45 degree angle, with three people hanging over the front to try and get on plane. We beach it and find that the transom was cracked and that was the cause of the sinkiing. WE had borrowed this boat to see if its something my family wanted to own, nope it was not.

Another time when I was a teenager I had my family jet ski out on the water and friend of mine had his boat on the water. I was letting different kids ride the ski. Well one kid could not get on the thing very well so he kept rolling it over. About this time he says its sinking. I tried to get my friends ski rope to tie to the jet ski so we could pull it to shore, but this rich teenager would not let me cut his rope to tie to the front of the ski. So we used the handle end and wrapped it around the handle bars, well all that did is pull the ski under more, now its really starting to sink. Ended up, six kids jumped into the water and about drowned as we swam the ski over to one the island near the manning dock. The clasp that hold the seat down to make the engine compartment water tight had come lose. Took it home, pulling the plugs and water was shooting 15 feet out of the holes when we turned it over. Ran great after that, but it was a close one.

I got more and more, but we will not go there. My parents had a rather large houseboat that I would take out as a teenager, so you can imagine. This would be a 2 or 3am ride on the boat, trying to impress the ladies, it did too.

Was fishing at sequoia early one morning the fish where in the jumps behind the wall had one foot on the wall trying to hold the boat and a big cruiser came by and I could not hold the boat .There where about a million willow flies that had washed up to the wall and I fell right between the boat and the wall in the middle of them .I came up with willow flies all over me. But I smelled good.

Here's a blast from the past - I titled it Chickamaglub-glub-glub:

Uh, I think I found my boat leak.

Alternate titles:
Gone in (another) 60 seconds
Voyage to the bottom of the lake
Sinking of the Titan-eric

Josh Schreiber has been trying to get together with me for a long time to get out on the water, but instead he, his wife, and I had (another) EricM ADVENTURE today, and it involved being IN the water, not on it.

I got to Skull Island early and ran out to net some shad, and since Josh was running late I stayed out and fished for about 2 hours, caught one 8 lb cat and a 10 lb drum (this is the fishing report part of the story), and talked with WLG and Monstercat, Cathooker, and Rsimms. I ran back to the ramp to pick up Josh & his wife and off we went! Got out to the nuke and as we slowed we suddenly were taking on water like you wouldn't believe. Full throttle and a quick turn back toward the ramp, and now the water is ankle deep and coming up fast. I dodged into the ski club ramp because there was NO way we were going to get back to Skull Island. One hundred yards to go and I'm sitting in water to my waist and the boat is wallowing like a pig and porpoising like mad. I barely had enough forward momentum to ram the bow up onto the ramp and destroy the prop when the boat settled onto the lower unit with the stern a foot under the water and everything floating out the back. Thank you God! We didn't have another 30 seconds before completely sinking.

I stood there scratching my butt and wondering just how I would ever salvage this disaster. Called Rsimms for advice and he gave the boat the last rites over the phone. We got a ride from a homeowner back to our cars (thank you, thank you good samaritan) and I decided to back the trailer up to the boat and push the trailer under the boat by backing up and winching at the same time. Good idea except the boat was almost sideways to the ramp and there was a steep drop-off on the edge of the ramp. A couple of guys from the ski club/community, Josh, and I pushed and pulled and wiggled and squirmed the boat partway onto the trailer, tied the bow down, and pulled it partway out to get the transom out of the water and start pumping with the bilge pump. Once we got enough water out, I straightened out and backed the boat into the water again to get it the rest of the way onto the trailer.

As horrible as the day was, I was soooo lucky to have not lost the boat and motor that I'm heading out to buy some lottery tickets.

After emptying everything out of the boat to dry out (I had thought to save the cell phone, the camera, my wallet, and the handheld GPS - told you I was lucky), I did an inspection to figure out what had happened. It turned out that the top shell of the boat had been delaminating from the hull in a back corner under the bumper rail, and with the extra weight of 3 people and a full bait tank, the seam was low enough to be below the water line on that side, so when it finally really opened up the water simply poured in when I slowed down.

Now for the hard part; repair this hull (probably not a good idea, it's 24 years old and I use a boat hard), buy a used hull and transfer the motor, etc. (maybe OK), or consider a new rig ($$$$$$). OMG, I could wind up needing a j.....o.....b (sob out loud)!

Sorry, I completely forgot how much fun pictures would have been (for all of you!), I never thought to take any! (Lucky again!)

And another EricM moment from the past:

Wanna hear how last spring I was launching my boat to chase after those big blue catfish and it was one of those beautiful late spring days and the water was just starting to warm up a little and I had backed my boat in and discovered that I hadn't gotten it quite far enough in and the big motor wouldn't get the boat off of the trailer so I had to back up just another foot or so but I didn't think to hook the boat back to the trailer and so I stood on the ramp watching my boat sail off toward wherever the Tennesse river finally goes and there wasn't a soul anywhere in sight and I stripped down (almost anyway) and went for a brisk swim and on the way back with the boat in tow I stepped on on old lure in the water and it only poked me some but I couldn't get the stupid thing (the lure, not me) out of my sock and I'm hopping and limping around and squeezing the water out of the baggy butt of my underwear and trying to gather up my clothes and NOW someone shows up on the boat ramp?

And just one more for your reading pleasure:

Watts Bar dam, dam, dam

I took my newly (if temporarily) repaired boat back up to Watts Bar dam and tied to the dam wall for some cattin'. The water was running pretty hard and I was using 6 oz of weight and still couldn't keep the bait in place, but was hitting some 8 to 12 lb blues. I was having to haul them a long way in heavy current, so I decided to move over a couple of discharge bays. And the saga begins.

So there I was..........

In the process of moving, I managed to get into the really heavy discharge boils and spun the wheel very hard and tore up the steering again (duct tape must have failed). Uh-oh! Double uh-oh!!! Now I'm helpless and moving toward the dam wall at a frightening clip, and I'm sure most of the water on the floor was mine! I sounded the collision alarm and braced for impact. I kind of suspected that this was gonna leave a mark. Yep, I was right. I managed to kiss (kiss, hell - a kiss like that would have broken teeth) a corner of one of the generator holes with the left rear corner of the boat, tore bumper rail and screws out, busted out a chunk of fiberglass well above the waterline, and likely cracked half-a-dozen vertebrae. I began to suspect that this was probably not going to be one of my better days. I then started wondering if my super-duper inflatible vest would deploy and support my overweight butt. I just KNEW I should have called Jenny Craig when I saw that commercial!

Of course, the motor quit when I had slammed it into reverse, so I was spinning in tight little circles and still smacking the wall. Luckily, the trolling motor protected the boat on one of the hits by absorbing the impact and busting off that useless tightening knob. Somewhere along about then my constipation problem was resolved so I at least had one fewer thing to worry about.

I finally got the motor started and made the whitewater trip over the biggest of the boils sideways. I was just a mite concerned looking up at the standing wave, but thought hell, just imagine what I would have had to pay for this ride at Disney World!

The rest of the trip was kind of boring.........

And my doctor wants me to take a stress test?????????????
